ENGL 1020 Blog Post Schedule and Prompts

Blog Post Prompts
Unless otherwise specified, each blog post should be between 350-400 words. Don't forget to list the word count at the end of the post. Blog posts are due at 11:59 PM of the date listed. 

1.       “Review of TED Talks”                           Due 9/2
Write a response to one or a few of the TED Talks you watched. Which TED Talk(s) did you watch? What thoughts immediately came to your head while watching? Have any of these episodes sparked interest in a potential topic for your researched argument?

2.      “Skills to be Learned Part 1”                      Due 9/4
Take a look at the document titled “Skills to be Learned” under Course Documents. Review the list. Are you unfamiliar with any of these skills? Pick 5 skills that you would like to improve upon and explain why.

3.      “Paper Topic Ideas”                                               Due 9/4
What theme have you selected and why does it interest you? What do you plan to do with this theme? What issue do you have in mind? Why does this interest you? What direction are you taking it?

4.      “Review of Sources”                                 Due 9/9
Take a look at the sources you have. Which one do you think best agrees with your argument? Why? Which one disagrees? Why? Which is your favorite? Are these sources going to work with your paper, or do you think you may need to keep looking?

5.      “Review of Annotated Bibliography”        Due 9/16
What is the purpose of the annotated bibliography? Who uses them? Why are the beneficial?

6.      “Review of Rhetorical Appeals.”               Due 9/23
Without looking at your notes, define ethos, pathos, and logos. Provide an example for each. Then write a newspaper ad for a VHS player and a collection of tapes (your choice which) using all three appeals.

7.      “Persuasive Letter”                                                Due 9/23
Similar to what we did in class on 9/18, write a persuasive letter to a person of authority in the area of your paper topic. Be sure to use all rhetorical appeals.

8.      “Ted Talk Analysis”                                  Due 9/25
Identify the rhetorical appeals used in a food related TED talk of your choice. Analyze its persuasive techniques. It can be the TED talk you watched for a previous assignment or a different one on the list.

9.      “Writing Reflection- Paper Proposal.”       Due 10/9
Now that you have finished your paper proposal, look over what you have written and think about what changes you would make if you had the time. What was the easiest part about this assignment? Hardest? Did the writing of your proposal help narrow down ideas for your final researched argument?  Reflect on your writing.

10.   “Writing Reflection: Researched Argument Part 1”  Due 10/16
After writing the first few pages of your researched argument, how do you feel at this point? How do you feel about your argument? Your research? Your writing?

11.  “Food & Culture Presentation Review”     Due 10/23
At this point in the semester you have heard 10 presentations on food from around the world. Which one did you like the most? What did you learn that interested you?

12.   “Writing After 1020”                                Due 10/30
By now you’ve had some experience with conducting college-level research and writing an argumentative paper. How will you use these experiences and skills in future courses?

13.   “The Final Draft”                                      Due 11/6
What are you most concerned about your final draft? What do you think will be easiest? How much work do you think you’ll need to do?

14.   “You Have Scarred Me for Life”              Due 11/13
Think about what you have learned in this class besides the writing. Are you going to be more conscious of what you eat? What is your more memorable food related moment from this class? Did I ruin eating for you?

15.   “Skills to be Learned Part 2”                     Due 11/20
Reread your first “Skills to be Learned” blog post. Which skills did you choose? Over the past few months have you made improvements in these areas? How can you use these skills in future courses?
